Basic understanding of Psoriasis

Psoriasis symptoms are itchy red patches with scales that appear to be a rash.  It can develop on your scalp, face, arms, hands, legs or back at around waistline and on the bottoms of your feet.  It can also effect other areas like finger and toe nails, the inside of your mouth and, possibility, your genitals. It is not contagious.  Psoriasis is hereditary, however people are known to have this skin irritation and not know a family member that does have it.  It occurs mainly in adult men and women and not children.   Less than 3% of the population is diagnosed with psoriasis.  This is not considered a skin disorder.

Psoriasis is an immune system disorder that affects the skin.  Skin cells are produced deep in the skin tissue and normally rise to the surface monthly.  T-cells (white blood cells) protect the body from disease and infection.  With psoriasis, the T-cells are over stimulated and other immune responses are triggered, causing skin cells to surface more quickly, every two to four days and the result makes the skin red, swollen, scaly and itchy.  If you have these symptoms you are likely to have a mild type of psoriasis.

There are four types.  The first is Plaque psoriasis as mentioned above.  Guttate psoriasis symptoms have smaller lesions, but cover larger parts of the body.  This is associated with having strep throat.  Pustular and Erythrodermic psoriasis’ can be life threatening because the entire skin surface has lesions that causes the skin to lose its protectiveness.  As with all skin irritations, one should consult a doctor.

A conventional doctor or a naturopathic doctor (doctor of alternative medicine) will be able to give a  diagnosis and prescribe proper treatment.  There are products available over the counter for mild cases.  A conventional doctor may prescribe an anti-itch, medicated crème that would include vitamin D or vitamin A.  If psoriasis is on your scalp, a tar shampoo can be used for a short period of time.  Keeping your skin moisturized will help the itch and reduce the redness.  A naturopathic doctor may prescribe nutritional supplements.  The prescription may include a capsule of primrose oil, an enzyme, vitamins A, B, C and D, kelp and zinc.  Using lavender in a steam room or sauna will stimulate cell growth.  For more severe psoriasis symptoms, there are treatments that will control the immune system and skin development.  Herbs also assist the immune system’s confusion of overproducing.  A healthy diet is suggested to reduce symptoms.

One should have a diet that includes 50% raw food that includes soybeans, flaxseed, sesame seed and fish oil.  Another way to help your body internally is to avoid fats like milk, butter, sugar, eggs, white flour, citrus fruits and processed foods.  These will reduce the production of arachidonic acid (AA).  This is an inflammatory that causes the redness and swelling.  Red meat and dairy also produce AA.  Avoid saturated fats and take linseed oil for unsaturated fat.
